Understanding and dealing with Self-Harm
Presented by Bill Van Schie

"Pain is what keeps you coming back for more. It's like sometimes when you're just walking down the street, and you trip? That sudden jolt of reality is all you need to snap you back to life. Well with me, I would live all day in a daze, and one swipe of the razor, and I was alive again."
(Female, 18yo, 5 years self harming; www.selfharm.net)

Self-harming is a crude and self-destructive tool, but it works for some people as a way to get relief from the overwheling feelings of pain, fear and anxiety that they feel in their life.

How can you help a person who suffers from self-harm realise that change is possible and that they can escape from their behaviours and that things can be different? What can you do to show them that other non-self-destructive tools exist to cope with life?

This training night will help you learn more about self-harm and how to help young people find positive alternatives to the pain they experience.
